Raffi

The. Classic. Children’s music artist. Could he have invented fun and beautiful children’s music as a genre? Totally possible! As a child, I remember listening to a lot of Raffi music from the library with my mom. “Corner Grocery Store” had silly rhymes, of “beans trying on jeans” and “corn blowing on a horn”; “This Little Light of Mine”; “Peanut Butter Sandwich”; and a classic for all-time, fun with vowels in, “Apples and Bananas”. Come to think of it, I really connected as a kid to the songs with humor in them. We laugh in the same language! May we keep in touch with our child-like wonder and appreciate the humor in our daily errands (at the corner grocery store!) Raffi also sings in French, which is wonderful to hear as a child to develop an appreciation of world languages. While born in Egypt, Raffi grew into his musical career in Eastern Canada and was influenced by Quebecoise. “Fait Dodo” is one of my daughter’s lullabies. At Mulberry Bush Sing-Along, Jeremy, a core member, plays “Baby Beluga” on the guitar weekly, to great communal swaying joy. In his twilight years, Raffi has begun a non-profit organization in British Columbia, Child Honouring, https://raffifoundation.org/, which resolutely connects a healthy Earth to the health of children. Thank you, Raffi, for all of your gifts to uplift our spirits and communities!
